Featured Educator of the Month
In this section of our Newsletter, we are honored to recognize the great STEM education work being done by our Participating Schools and CTE/STEM teachers at our Participating Schools. This month we are pleased to recognize:
Jennifer Card
Jennifer Card is a teacher, mentor and coach; completing her 22nd year at Karnes City High School(KCHS). She currently teaches Biology, a STEM UIL class, Dual Credit Biology courses, and Environmental Science. She is also completing her 20th year as an Adjunct Professor at Coastal Bend College. Before joining the faculty at KCHS, she worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife on a migratory game bird research study, and worked for Texas A&M University Kingsville as a science lab instructor.
Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Statistics and a Master of Science degree in Biology and Wildlife Management as a Sinclair Scholar from Texas A&M University Kingsville. She also has her coaching credentials, having coached cross country, track, and golf, taking athletes to the state level in all three sports.
Mrs. Card is the UIL academic coach for multiple STEM events including Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Number Sense. She started a Computer Science Programming team at Karnes City High School and last year brought home a District Championship.
Jennifer believes in a hands-on/project-based approach when teaching her students in the classroom. She brings her experiences from her family cow-calf ranching operation. Ms. Card is also part of a family-owned aircraft maintenance and restoration business. Her family is well known in all sectors of aviation within Texas and even the United States. She believes discussions with her students about her careers lends the opportunity to support students’ future decisions.
Mrs. Card has received many awards during her career. She received the Bronze Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation program in New York from the President of the United States, for her work as Chairman of the School Wellness Council. She was nominated for the HEB Excellence in Education Award and has received the KCHS teacher of the year award five times. Currently she serves as President of the Pawnee ISD Board of Trustees, the school district in which she resides. This school district is remote and innovative. Pawnee works to promote a vast range of career technologies in areas of animal science, and agriculture. Children in this school raise chickens to collect eggs, and most recently installed a vegetable and fruit farm on the campus. Students maintain their own tractor for the field and tend the growing crops . The ultimate goal for this school, and the introduction of the school farm, is to open a small community grocery store, operated by the students. The community is more than 30 miles from any retail food store and the school, School Board, and its President would like the school to help the community.
